Chip Morningstar is an experienced high-tech entrepreneur, a pioneer in multi-user online systems for commerce and entertainment, and an expert developer of advanced software technology. He has won awards as the principal designer and development manager of the first large scale, massively multi-user graphical online virtual world, Lucasfilm's Habitat (as part of which he coined the term "avatar" in its modern use), and he was a creative and technical advisor for several other massively multi-user online virtual environments. Chip's other notable accomplishments include:

  • Architect and development manager for the world's first person-to-person online marketplace and e-commerce system, The American Information Exchange, prior to the Internet revolution.
  • Engineering overhaul of the world's largest graphical chat system, The Palace, supporting an expansion of the user base from 50,000 users to over 1,000,000 in less than a year. This included code quality improvements to increase server MTBF from around 2 hours to several months.
  • Implementation team leader for Yahoo!'s overhauled user identity framework, to allow a billion Yahoo! users to present their online identities publicly on millions of Yahoo! web pages without fear of spam, privacy invasion, or identity theft.
  • Co-creator of the JSON data interchange standard, now used ubiquitously throughout the web.

Chip is frequently invited to speak at conferences and workshops on the topics of online social systems, massively multi-player games, electronic commerce, identity, software security, and distributed systems. He is regularly engaged as a technical consultant and expert witness in patent litigation, having created fundamental prior art in numerous areas of online and distributed systems technology.
